Camp Quality

Camp Quality is a non-profit, volunteer organisation providing a camping experience in a week of fun and joy for children with cancer.

In a double-barrel function, it also gives the families of these children a much-needed rest, knowing that the finest program has been selected to keep their child happy. More importantly, they are assured that adequate medical supervision is an integral part of every camp plan.

Camp Quality now operates in seven countries in about 30 centres. Only three people in the international organisation are paid. The remainder of the people involved in Camp Quality — the medical teams, organisers and companions to the children — are voluntary.

Camp Details

  • There is never any cost to the child or the family at Camp Quality.
  • The camps are sponsored by the community at large.
  • Organisations, churches and individuals sponsor children to the camps.
  • Camp Quality does not ask for or receive any Government fundings. All donations are tax deductible.
  • The money being raised on the Tweed was directed to Camp Quality.
  • At the camp, each child is allotted a companion, who provides one-on-one attention.
  • The companion is introduced to the child prior to the camp and keeps in touch with the camper long after camp ends.
  • These companions can be aged from 18 to grandparents ‘‘status.”
  • They come from all walks of life and received training prior to service.
  • Guidelines for the volunteer staff insist that no alcohol or tobacco is permitted on the camp and no alternative medicine should be discussed.
  • No religious denominations may be promoted and a belief in a life after death are also stipulations.
  • A willingness to put their own wants and needs to one side for the week is also asked of the volunteers.
  • All companions say they receive “twice as much as they give” after spending one week at a Camp Quality.
